CLEARWELL CAVES

Here in Clearwell Caves, iron ore has been mined for thousands of years. Whilst visiting you have the opportunity to meet a Free Miner. A Free Miner is someone who’s ancient birthright allows them to mine for materials within the Royal Forest of Dean and the Hundred of St Briavels.

These iron mines in the Clearwell Caves are a very important part in the history and environment of the Forest of Dean. The owners of Clearwell Caves are father and son, Ray and Jonathan Wright.

Clearwell Caves opened with only one cavern in 1968. In each following year another cavern was opened to the public until the 9 caverns that are there today were opened and enjoyed by the public. Jonathan joined his father Ray in 1984. Together they have worked on expanding the facilities and activities and are continuing to do so over the future years.
