A touching tale of a young feisty 17 year old’s journey into adulthood is presented by the Hull Truck Theatre. The original play that took the West End by storm in the 1960′s will take to the Everyman stage as one of the classics of British cinema.
The story is set in the year of 1959 where Jo, an 17 year old desperate to escape from her lewd, promiscuous mother, falls in love with a coloured sailor on shore leave. After a quick love affair, the sailor Jimmy returns to sea; while at the same time Jo’s mother abandons her too.
Jo determined to make it on her own finds herself a job and flat and soon allows homosexual friend Geoffrey to move in.
When Jo discovers she is pregnant, Geoffrey, grateful for her friendship, then assumes the role as surrogate father to her unborn child but as their relationship deepens and Jo’s mother returns determined to take control of Jo’s life; which “family” will emerge?
